I used to work for a vet who would keep them overnight-- he lived only a couple of blocks from the hospital, and he would go back himself in the early evening and then again in the middle of the night to check on animals that had surgery that day. He was an excellent vet and a very good surgeon, and this was how he had always done it for 30 years.
The place I work now sends neuters home the same day. I will say that we get a lot more calls from worried owners than the other place used to-- the first night after a major surgery, some dogs are quite disoriented from the anesthesia and can sometimes be very vocal, and that can cause owners to get really very worried even if the dog is doing fine.
I can honestly see reasons for doing it either way, but I wouldn't want to leave my dog overnight after a surgery unless somebody was going to check in on her.
