Question Shipping Questions! Experienced Frequent Shippers Needed!

I'm starting out selling a few handmade things.

Would it be better for me to buy a postal scale and print my shipping labels at home and do all that or would it be better to just take it to the postal service and let them do it for me?

I haven't shipped many things. Plus, I'm a huge worrier and I want to do it the way it's going to be easiest. I just feel if I bought a scale, it'd be easier just doing everything at home then taking it and dropping it off or have it picked up.

Just wanted some experienced input though!

Also, does it matter what type of packaging I use if I were to do it at home with my own scale? Would I need postal service specific packaging or would just regular packaging from say... Wal-mart be alright?

Any other input or advice is welcomed!!!
