It all depends, I do both. I don't have a car seat but I have a buckle that clicks into the seatbelt and it attaches to his leash. He hates being strapped in in any way shape or form. I've tried the crate, the seatbelt thing, etc and he will bark for a while before giving up. I always just ignore him and he's gotten better at it. But if it's not gonna be a long ride, I let him sit on my lap (never after he's been barking though - only after being good and quiet) he's very good on my lap and just sits there and looks out the window.
