I am no expert by any means but Adie and Skeeter's mother was bred three times and all three times she either had a singleton or two puppies with one not surviving. Adie had a sister but Skeeter was the singleton. The breeder told me she was going to have their mother spayed and find her a good forever home. She didn't want to put her through all the turmoil surrounding loosing puppies and then being very overprotective of the singletons. She said that she would probably never have more than one or two puppies and it was too expensive to be in that situation. Adie's grandmother has large litters.
(And no, I'm not going to adopt the mother. She already has a home within the breeder's family.) (And dh would shoot me!)
