Joey doesn't mark in our house either, but when we visit others, he wears a band, and there is evidence that he tried to mark. The hormone testosterone is responsible for marking. The testes make the bulk of testosterone, and if neutered earlier enough, some dogs never mark. The adrenal glands make some testosterone, and the amount varies in dogs, and some female's adrenal glands make enough testosterone for them to mark as well. Also, a dog who has never marked might start marking because another dog entered its life, and this event caused the adrenal glands to make more testosterone. While Joey never marks inside, he is a marking machine when we go on walks, and I think this can cut down on a dog wanting to mark inside the house. |
