It sounds like a typical vet thing to do and was probably fine but I would've wanted to know too. I would've waited on the surgery, espeically in the case of a spay because if it is LS, both surgeries can be done at once...particularly important for the girls so their abdomen only needs to be opened once.
But there is a very long list of possible causes for high ALT and just because it goes down doesn't always mean the bile acids are normal.
