I'm so sorry, you must be feeling horrible. I'm glad you are able to get surgery for him, I've read of others who have to give their dogs up to rescue, because they can't afford the surgery, and this just puts so much extra stress on the puppy, as well as the family. Although free feeding is great, if you have to make sure he doesn't eat any of the other dog's food, it might be best to have scheduled feeding times so that you can supervise. Best of luck with the surgery, and I'll be praying for you and Joey.
