Mine all stay gated in the kitchen & foyer. The floors are easy to clean should someone have an accident. This way they're not crated all day if I'm gone really long. They can play with each other, their toys, and their kitties. hehe Doggie daycare is GREAT, but like you said if you work later than in most cases 6pm it's not an option. I do also keep their crates in the foyer, open with beds in them, so they can use them to nap if they want to. I also use washable pee pads when I'm not home for my little guys.
