This is true (what the breeder told you). Many people are leaving the AKC because the other registries are cheaper. That's why the AKC is now offering incentives to get breeders back.
FYI, I put a thread in the Breeder section about AKC registration, and most puppy owners don't seem to care anyway, so a lot of breeders are ceasing to care too much, as long as their dogs are pure, who cares what the papers are.
