Weigh the carrier, then the carrier with the pup and subtract.
I also think the vet is a good idea IF your pup has had all of their shots and you call ahead to make sure no really sick pets have been in that day.
We did that with Gizmo because he was VERY scared of the vet at first, and we wanted him to have some really good memories there too. The girls at the office all love all over him and he eats up the attention.
