Buddy sounds like my Fletcher. He does not guard a toy but he has his quirks at night. Some nights he is a sweet loving cuddly puppy, other nights, he prefers to lay in the kitchen alone on a blanket (not even his bed) away from us and if he comes over for even a minute and we look at him or talk to him, he'll go back to the kitchen alone. If we ignore him he'll jump on the couch and lay down away from us and eventually come to us to lay down IF we totally ignore him. As soon as we give him attention he takes off. His personality definately changes as day turns to night. He gets skittish and meek when its dark out, but during the day he is a happy puppy!
