You definitely need to be consistent while he's still a puppy. My personal preference is to have the puppy sleep in his/her crate at night, mostly because it is dangerous to have a puppy in bed with you. Not only could you injure the puppy, but the puppy could easily fall or jump off the bed and be very badly injured or even die.
You said he pees in his crate? Does he pee on your bed? Most dogs won't pee in their crates, and it can be a tough "habit" to break. Maybe you should have him sleep in a playpen with a wee wee pad?
Are you training him to go potty indoors or out? Either way, if he is peeing in his crate, I'd say he needs to go out more often! I'd start taking him out every couple of hours until he IS potty trained. Like I said, peeing in his crate is a very tough thing to stop, and you don't want that habit forming.
Also, when you leave him for the morning in the kitchen, make sure you don't leave any toys in there that he could hurt himself on, for instance, toys with stuffing. If he ripped the toy open, he could choke on the stuffing. I only leave rubber toys with my dog when I'm not there.
HTH.
