I'm sorry you're in this situation! As if breaking up and that change in life isn't difficult enough for you already!

Anyway, I think from what you've said it'd be better for your little one to stay with you. That said, I do get why (if he has become attached) that he'd still want contact with your little one. While "sharing" isn't really the best idea, you could at least entertain the idea. I'd think having him take care of the dog for one day a week or every other week. If what you say is true soon enough he'll be too busy to even do that and he'll take care of the situation all by himself!

All the same I really hope everything works out well for you, as best as it can!

P.S. I think the "buy out" idea is a good one too!
