The "leave it" command can work great if practiced and taught. One of the puppies in our training class picked up a pill his daddy dropped on the floor
He dropped it immediately on the "leave it" command. Although his daddy said it could have been the frantic tone of his voice that did it, but it probably saved his life!
P.S. That puppy was a "Yorkie"!
