I grew up in California and we had a beetle we called a "stink bug." They are about an inch long, a dullish black body, longish legs...back legs longer than front. If you stepped on them, they gave off a disgusting odor. If I remember right, they could also emit that odor if you tried to pick it up, sweep it out the door, or otherwise disturb it from its business.
