It's pretty new, so possibly under researched.
They can still lay eggs before they bite and those eggs can fall in your house and you can have an infestation. The same goes for any med though...infestation is still possible.
I wouldn't say it's more dangerous. the toxins from the topical are stiil absorbed by the dog, so that could be just as dangerous. It is just too new to tell.
This should not be given with high doses of Ivermectin like the injections for mites.
