I usually pick them up as soon as Thor uses them, especially if he poops on it. I pick the poop up separately and flush it. Before throwing away the used pee pad, I will blot one corner of the new one with Thor's urine. He definitely sniffs around before he uses it.
I've heard that dogs don't like using heavily soiled pads, so I try to maintain a balance between clean and dirty.
