Funny...Johnny had the hardest time learning the down command. I even put him on his ottoman-think I read this how-to on here-and tried to coax him to lay down by putting the treat at his nose and bringing it lower. He would jump off the ottoman to get down to the treat instead of laying down. So we worked on the floor, bringing the treat to the floor
To get him to sit, I put a finger in the center of his back near his hip and gave a gentle push. I saw a trainer do that with Martha Stewart's dog.
I think the cowering shows how much dogs rely on body language.
