Haha, sure, why not start with lay down? Nikko is great at sitting, but we just cannot figure out how to convince him to lay down for the life of us. He just jumps away or at the treat like, "What? I sat! Gimme that treat!!!"
I've read that a hand over the head, even just for a friendly petting, is kind of a dominating move, so maybe she's responding to that. Do you sit on the ground with her when you're practicing tricks or stand or squat?
