I work 8-5 with a 1/2 hour commute (both ways) - Lexi has full roam around the house with our Golden Retriever. Although I would only allow your dog to have full roam if you trust them and your house is dog-proof. I know a lot of members use xpens to contain their babies while they aren't around.

The doberman is locked in the kennel and the St Bernard/Pyrenese is either in her masters bedroom or outside. They can't be trusted with the little one all day...or pillows/garbage cans for that matter.
