You are right- they should be life style changes but i don't feel it is right for you to be telling people what is and what isn't lent. Everyone practices in their own way and a way that feels right for them- you think what you do it right and I think what i do is right and that is all that matters. If they're not practicing lent (which consists of three things as written and practiced historically) then why call it lent? People can do what they want, this is true. I do what I want, but I don't call it something that it's not. If I'm vacuuming the floor, I don't call it dusting. I call it vacuuming.
No, people don't have to go to church to be close to god. I used that as an example. I could have said: Pray before bed.... light candles in his name, etc etc. During lent one of the three things that are practiced is being closer to god... in whatever way you choose.
If you want to practice lent how it *was* practiced, then go out and give some of your time to a good cause, and get closer to god, and give up something you love for a little while. How hard is it to do it the way religion has dictated it be done? I'm not confused about lent, I suppose. I'm more confused about doing it halfway and calling it complete when it's not.
