Humping does stop in some, but marking is what most people hate. It's almost impossible to stop, no matter what method you use, that's why breeders often use belly bands on their male dogs. He will stay energetic and playful even though neutered, and it's something he will never miss. I almost think it's cruel not to neuter, because then he'll know he's missing out on something. You are lucky you are in CA, they have many low cost neuter programs and licensing fees are much less for a neutered dog. Here's a list of some clinics in CA.
