I have been extremely lucky with Baxter... He sleeps in his crate beside our bed. I know I should be careful what I ask for but I wish Baxter would bark at us when he does have to go.
The first week I would go to sleep at 11pm and wake up at 2am, 4am then 6 to let him out. Gradually (every few days) I have stretched the intervals. I soon went to 11pm, 3:30am, 7am. Now he goes out before going to be at 11 and makes it till 7am (when i get up for work). Schedule is important to a puppy so maybe giving him more intervals to go out and do his business will allow him to sleep better/longer.
