After reading threads back to page 14, I'm still not sure what is going on. We got our puppy a week ago. He came from a breeder who gifted him to us. We still don't know why. The breeder has 5 kids who all play with the puppies but I have no idea how he was trained or anything. He is 13 weeks old.
He is crate trained and it is his safe spot. Our kids (14, 12, 9 and 7) all know not to get him out of the crate or take a toy out that he has taken in there. He loves going into his crate (a cat transporter) and sleeps there all night until someone wakes and goes to the bathroom and then he's UP!
He comes to us and sits. He sits a LOT. What do we do with that? He pees somewhat frequently and yesterday I had him at the vet, the bank (here that is a 2-hour process) and the dentist (twice). We were gone from 11:00 until 3pm and he wouldn't pee outside even though he had opportunities, but waited until he got to "his spot" here. Last night I thought he had to poop and had the 14yo take him out but he ended up pooping outside but in the house. Our house is 1/2 outside (kitchen and diningroom) and 1/2 inside (sleeping quarters and bathroom). Just the last few days I've been praising him for pee/poop (as do the kids) but he's pretty nonchalant about the whole thing. What do we do with this? Treat it as normal (yeah you peed/pooped, good job, let's get on with life) or have a little celebration each time? I'm trying to teach him "PEE" and say that over and over when I take him to eliminate - sometimes he goes but usually he knows when he needs to go and just humors me if I'm wrong but patiently waiting until I give up.
I'm not sure he drinks enough water. How often should he be peeing?
He gets "out" a lot - multiple times throughout the day - at least 2-3 times with me and 2-3 times with the youngest 2 kids. He is going to bed on our schedule - around midnight - and getting up whenever we are loud enough to wake him. Yesterday, that was 5am when I got up to pee. So now he's in the boys' room and maybe he'll sleep longer. Does that sound right?
He's begun nipping the youngest two girls and I figured out (I think) that he doesn't see them as dominant so I'm going to have them start doing the "flip him on his back and stare at him thing". Does that sound right?
Thanks for any advice. We've named him Kilo Papageorgio.
