Smile IMO not essential.

I think that having a dog that minds and one that is well behaved is important. I don't think that obedience training is essential. I think that to each his own. If it is essential to you and yours then go for it, it is a very rewarding experience provided you have the right teacher. I went through an obedience training course, when I was a teenager, with my first dog Einstein, he was a Schnauzer. I had alot of fun and I learned alot. I have taught Matise on my own to walk on a leash(he's only 3 lbs. it's not hard to restrain him!!! ), the "STOP" command(so he stops dead in his tracks when he is off leash), come, sit, down. In my opinion this breed(well most terriers) can be very-stubborn and think they are "in control" but I think that you can establish that you are the Alpha without obedience training. Maybe if you are a first time dog owner then you maybe should consider it. IMO.
