I've had fosters for as little as overnight and one I kept for 5 months (only because he was "special" and by my choice). Normally it's a couple of weeks to get them vetted, a new home application processed and approved. It's really up to you how involved you want to become, they need help with all aspects; fostering, transporting and donations (which can be $$ or crafting items for sale).
