I tried bells with our Bichon and it didn't really work. She'd wait till the last min, run like crazy to ring the bells and by the time we got downstairs she'd gone on the rug. Our split entry home has made it impossible to see or hear them at the door. We have just had to ask every dog we've had "do you need potty?" and if they head for the door we know they gotta go.
