Oh, I should also mention... do you mind traveling? If you can't find a shelter that will offer it, you could try looking for a vet in a smaller place. When I got Layla spayed, I think it cost $180. I took her to the vet in the small town where I grew up. They were great to her and didn't charge the sometimes outrageous city vet prices! A friend of mine had her dog spayed around the same time for $425 here in the city.
