I had never heard of Diamond dog food back in '98 when I had started feeding that to my shihtzu. She was 3-5 yrs old at the time and we had picked up the largest bag based on recommendation by the shop owner. She had come to us with a dull grey-black and white coat. That same shop owner had shaved our girl down to her skin--literally. That was her idea of a short summer cut.

As her hair grew back while being on this food, there was a noticeable shine to her white and her previously grey hairs became a more vibrant black. Her white had a shiny sheen to it as well. It could have been the work of the sun too, who knows. Her previous owners fed her mainly table scraps for the 6 or so months they had her. The owners before them, I can't be sure.

After her bag of Diamond dog food was finished, I was unable to find it in the usual pet food stores and didn't care to go back to that woman who shaved ALL of her hair off. Well, later on, when I went by, that warehouse type setup was no longer anyway. I had moved on to IAMS because they had great marketing. There wasn't a day that went by when they didn't have a TV ad up. She was fed Iams for maybe 2 yrs when I came upon all the Iam-hate websites and read up on the bad publicity. So, I figured Science Diet seemed safe. It was in most, if not all, vet clinics, right? Well, it seems they're not good enough now either. But she was on SD for the rest of her life except for the brief period when we had gone through the raw then the cooking-of-the-raw diet. While on Iams and SD and even on the raw/cooked, her hair never had the same shine, but never got to the same "dull grey" either but she did develop skin allergies later on in her life .

My yorkie was started on locally packed ground chicken & bones raw plus Eukaneba kibble diet by her breeder. I had started off continuing the same raw feed but later had to heat it up for her as she didn't seem to take to raw too well. Then she went on to Innova EVO (she was very gassy on that) and then Petcurean's now! Turkey & Duck for puppies (until they switched the formula to Turkey, Duck & Salmon for puppies--she became more itchy and it's not because she's allergic to salmon as that's what she's always gotten for treats). So now she's on Orijen 6-fish and Natural Balance Duck & Potato and is doing well enough. But I do think she did best overall when she was on Petcurean's Turkey & Duck for puppies.
