I'd keep the area they have freedom in very small at first - no more than a small room, maybe less. We used collapsed moving boxes which we taped together and then taped to walls. When he was allowed to roam free, he was in his special smallish area and we were in it with him watching him at all times. When we needed to be in a different room or area, or couldn't watch him, he went into his crate. Gradually as he learned to not pee in his tiny area, we would move the boxes back a few feet and give him a little bit more of the room, adding maybe 6 square feet at a time.

At 5.5 months, my boy is not all the way potty trained yet by far, but he's definitely making good progress. Good luck... you have an awful long ways to go still for housetraining. :-) It's usually not easy or quick at all, but it's definitely worth the hard work.
