I would tell you that getting bloodwork is the smart thing to do. I used to work for a vet for 7 yrs and when they say they arent there at night, there is usually someone that will stop in to check over night, since I used to do that all the time! Neutering is so much easier than spaying, he really should be fine. It's probably better off that he is there overnight anyways, since he will be groggy. he will be fine!
