Gas anesthesia is just for maintenance. Your vet will begin with a pre op shot to relax her, and then follow up with a tranquilizer so she can be intubated.

Your vet will either use isoflurane or sevoflurane. I think isoflurane is the preferred of the two for a small dog as there is a risk of the body temperature dropping too low with sevo.

If you have concerns about the process, your vet should be willing to discuss it with you.
