This morning I put him on the pad straight away, and he peed on command. Very nice. Then while I was throwing away the old pee pad, he ran after me, pooping. Oops! Quick and easy to pick up, thankfully.

I think my new strategy is going to be to periodically crate him and refuse to grant him his freedom until he goes.

The thing is of course that ultimately, I want him to take the initiative on this and pee in the right place on his own. How can you tell if the dog is ready to do that? Presumably you can't keep him in the crate forever.
