Here are some suggestions (and they have worked for me).
1. First - as a rule you can tell where the quick is because the nail is wider at that part and then narrows.
2. have someone hold a little spoon of cream cheese or peanut butter.
3. prepare ahead of time - get a nylon and put their paw through it to pull back the hair - you will want to clip as quickly as possible without having to worry about hair.
4. Clip a bit at a time to start establishing trust.
5. Lastly, and my hubby and I had to resort to this for one of our Yorkies - he would hold her and growl in her ear - showing DOMINANCE while I grabbed each foot and quickly clipped way.
Again - these are suggestions only - no scientific research in them - just had Yorkies for over 20 years.
