When your baby is at least a couple of months old and you start noticing her colours changing on her head, look at the roots. If her back is still black, chances are, it'll stay black. If by a year, the colours haven't shown any desire to change, you likely have a pup who will keep its black and tan colouring for the rest of its life.

Same applies to the head. You can look at the roots and see if it's changing into a tan. It also may lighten to a golden tan or blonde later on. And then go even lighter as they age. From what I've seen, they either stay about the same or go lighter and lighter, never darker/deeper in tone.
