Take your time in selecting a good breeder. In regards to Yorkies being expensive--breeding ethically is not a cheap venture. Breeders have costs invested in their programs that they have to try to cover by charging for the pups they decide to place, therefore the dogs are not cheap. (In short, it's not just your imagination, but it's jusfyable.)
If your funds are limited, your best bet would be to try a rescue or shelter. Generally rehoming fees are considerably less than what a breeder charges for a new pup.
