I think holding them together is not necessarily a good idea.

We tried that at first, stupid us, and our cat immediately took offense and lashed out one paw towards the puppy. She's not an aggressive cat by any means, but that's how it was. Now our cat's become our yorkie's favourite chew toy. But the lesson we learned was that forcing any physical contact between them is not advised and doesn't work well with every cat/dog.
