My fiance' and I had a cat before we adopted our baby. At first, the cat did not want anything to do with the dog, and vice versa. So we started to introduce them to each other by holding the dog near the cat, while petting the cat. Eventually they both got the idea that it's ok for them to be around each other. Now our little baby loves to play with the cat. Our cat was also a rescue that had it's front paws de-clawed, so she usually just bats at the dog whenever he starts to play.
