Default Collapsed Trachea???

My oldest (almost 7) has always had a 'dry cough' more like a honk, with age and some weight gain thanks to my grand daughter sharing all her meals, it has gotten worse. He has had x-ray's in the past, the thought was an enlarged heart causing this cough. Well, now I'm thinking a real food diet, and additional exercise, which has not been much this winter, as in my readings I understand this can help with a collapsed trechea. Anyone have any experience or suggestions with this??? I need to get them into the vet, but on a very strict lean budget with the economy right now, I have to wait a little bit. Is there a way to tell if he does have this condition myself? Any home helps anyone could recommend? Any help would be fantastic! I don't want to lose him anytime soon!!
