Animal Smiley 019 Piddle pad question

The last time I had a puppy, piddle pads hadn't been invented yet, so this is new to me. I am wondering about "strategies" for using them.

Right now, each time she eats or drinks or gets "sniffy," I take Puddin to the pad and put her on it. If she wanders off, I put her back. If she starts to squat somewhere else, I put her on the pad. As she is looking for the "right spot" on the pad, I tell her "go potty." As she is going and when she is done, I praise her (no treats yet...want my vet's advice on what to give a pup this young). This is basically the same technique I used to use with newspapers in the pre-puddle pad days.

I am home most days, so she won't be left alone often to pee or poop wherever she wants... when I was paper training a puppy, I worked and it took a very long time. How long should I expect it to take before she makes the association between the biological urge and the pads? Is it quicker than newspapers?
