Action Needed:
The Pet Quality Assurance Act will be heard in the Business and Economic Development Committee on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 4:30 PM in Room 412C at the Oklahoma City Capitol. It is urgent that the committee members hear from supporters of the bill before then.
The legislation would allow a state licensing program which will provide minimum standards for breeding, sales, care, and transport of dogs and cats. These standards will improve animal welfare, consumer protection and public health.
Individuals opposed to all animal welfare legislation are trying hard to defeat this important legislation. Please contact the committee members listed below and express your support for the basic standards in HB 1332. Please join us at the capitol for the hearing.
Background:
The Oklahoma Pet Quality Assurance and Protection Act, House Bill 1332 introduced by Rep. Lee Denney, DVM
Provides law enforcement and OK Department of Agriculture the tools needed to regulate currently unlicensed breeders
Pet Quality Assurance Enforcement Fund derived from fees, fines, etc. will allow for funding for enforcement
No impact on responsible AKC breeders
No impact on dog shows
No impact on hobby breeders
No impact on responsible breeders of hunting dogs
Provides quality assurance for this Oklahoma agriculture industry, eliminating the reputation of Oklahoma producing inferior dogs
Provides a more stable market for responsible dog breeders with higher quality dogs and higher profitability
Allows for the taxation of all breeders

Once this bill is out of committee you will be asked to contact each of your own representatives.
