Spyware protection programs are different than virus protection programs. Both can slow down your computer, but it's much easier to get infected with lots of spyware. I don't think my computer has ever had a virus, even when I didn't have protection, but you can get 20 spyware programs attacking you very easily. Most won't hurt your computer, they do slow it down.
