I know all puppies are different, but my Capone has an exercise pen with plenty of toys that he never minds playing in. I used to put a pee pad in there so he could potty in it, but suprisingly he never used the bathroom in it at all. He sleeps in it too and thats where he is when no one is home with him. I think he doesn't potty in it because he plays and sleeps all over the whole pen. I think your puppy is peeing in the middle of the night because it can't hold it overnight yet, like others have said, put your puppy in a crate and when he starts going crazy (should be pretty loud) put him on the pad and when he's done give him a treat.
