I bought both because I thought they were different, but they are the same with just different application methods. There was a poll once before and the overwhelming majority used the gel, but I think the spray is really easy. His mouth doesn't have to be open; I just lift the lip and spray each side. The gel takes a little more time. I've been using it since he got his adult teeth, so it's been more of a preventative for us. Vet said that his teeth were in great shape at our last visit.
