The lady I work for breeds yorkies and keeps them in long cut--she just shaves the entire belly/nipple area being very careful not to get the outer skirting hair. They get shaved from their bootie almost to their pits and she has had good success with no puppies getting tangled in the hair. My yorkie girl is spayed, and I have her in show coat, I actually trim her up this way so the hair on her tummy doesn't get all tangled--she looks good, but less to brush/tangle.
