Hi, I was in the same situation as you and truly never came out of it.
When Gucci was a puppy I bought a muzzle b/c the barking was so out of control.
When ever he'd bark uncontrollably I'd put on the muzzle for a couple of minutes and scold him. He'd become submissive and just lay around me until I took it off. Once it was established that the muzzle was "punishment" when he'd go off again all I had to do was show him the muzzle and he'd stop.

Now as a grown dog (and I hadn't use the muzzle in a while) he's back to barking. I am able to control it for the most parts but when I am not here I leave him in the bedroom with everything he needs in there. That way, even if he does bark it doesn't really disturb as much.

I'm still having barking issues with him but it's now that he barks at other dogs and who ever is coming or leaving my apt...oi...it never ends!
