I haven't had this with my current dogs, but my Pomeranian I had years ago had this with one of his knees. He was under 2 years old. He, like your pup, got to the point where it really hurt him so I took him to the vet.

He even did a drawing of the leg and knee area - showing how the ligament on one side had become not only stretched, but detached, and the cap shifted over. He explained that he would make a grove under where the knee cap is normally to help keep it in place when he put some type of replacement material on that side & connected it so everything would stay in place.

BooBear was great after the operation. He never had any other trouble with that knee, or the good one either.
