Make sure he can see you when he is in his crate- Putting him in another room a) will only make his crying worse and b) he wont be able to tell you when he has to pee which will defeat the whole purpose. Dogs are pack animals and need to sleep with their "pack". Layla's crate is on a little table near my bed- so she is able to see me- howeve,r now i'm sure i could put her on the floor and she woudlnt' care- she LOVES her crate and goes in when she is ready for bed but we sleep in the basement and in the winter the floor might be too cold
thanks again, I think that is the difference between what we did with Sam and what I'll need to do for Harley. Sam really didn't care that he was in the xpen at night. he would fall asleep and someone would put him in there and he never really woke up at night or cried. Harley is very vocal and letting us know he is not happy. I will put the crate in the spare bedroom tonight and sleep in there. DH get us too early to deal with this, on the other hand I have a flexible schedule and can sleep in late.
