it is NEVER too old. I think crate training is the best gift you can give your dog- they will forever have a safe place for travel, emergencies and just somehwere they can go that is THEIRS. Layla was crate trained from the day she got home, hwoever, cried the first 3 nights. When she would stop- i told her good girl, and took her out to pee, then put her right back in.
Make sure he can see you when he is in his crate- Putting him in another room a) will only make his crying worse and b) he wont be able to tell you when he has to pee which will defeat the whole purpose. Dogs are pack animals and need to sleep with their "pack". Layla's crate is on a little table near my bed- so she is able to see me- howeve,r now i'm sure i could put her on the floor and she woudlnt' care- she LOVES her crate and goes in when she is ready for bed

but we sleep in the basement and in the winter the floor might be too cold
