Was the poop on his butt hard and dry? If that is the case then his butt is red and irritated from having the poop stuck to it and the straining might have just been from him trying to get the poop off. If the poop was soft and icky then you need to get him to the vet and have his stool check for coccidia. You might also want to trim the hair on the bottoms of all the puppies.
